La Science des moeurs au siècle des Lumières

La « science des moeurs » entreprend d’étudier l’homme en passant par l’observation et l’expérience. Au xviiie siècle, elle se propose d’appliquer une méthode nouvelle à un objet jusqu’alors
réservé aux métaphysiciens ou aux moralistes. Or, une telle proposition n’est pas sans poser problème.

The science of mores seeks to study man through observation and experimentation. In the
eighteenth century, it attempted to apply a new methodology to an object that had previously
been the exclusive preserve of metaphysicians and moralists. This would raise a number of
problems.
